Brooke Tyler’s Journey to Inspire
You ever get a feeling? A feeling that is deep inside. A feeling that almost has a life of its own. A mind of its own. If you listen closely, you can hear it telling you “what if I….” The more you listen, the louder it gets. Whether you are starting out or starting over or wondering if it’s time to start something new inspiration can come to you from anywhere if you’re listening for it. This week our guest blogger Brooke Tyler of Clasique Acupuncture and Pilates Studio shares her story about a feeling she had, one that she couldn’t let go! I hope her journey inspires you to go with the feeling that is nagging at you!
I had an idea. A feeling. Well, I have lots of feelings… I’m a feeler. But I had a sense that what I love to do professionally as an Acupuncturist and a Classical Pilates Instructor and Pilates Teacher Trainer would also teach, nourish, and inspire many others. The principles behind these modalities are also the guiding principles of my personal life. I had a feeling that by creating a space and offering these modalities, clients would find more strength, freedom, and a general sense of empowerment in their personal lives. And so I began creating Clasique Acupuncture & Pilates studio.
Classical Pilates and Classical Chinese Medicine house all the philosophy and theory for a life well-lived. Clients at Clasique have an opportunity to build deep strength at the core of the self, the feeling of freedom that comes from intentional movement, and the inspiration and tools for living an authentic, integrated, heart-centered life. Acupuncture and Pilates both lead us to feeling rooted and uplifted simultaneously.
Clasique Acupuncture & Pilates Studio opened in 2009, during my last year of a four-year master’s program in Chinese Medicine in Asheville. I had at this point been teaching Pilates as an independent contractor since completing my apprenticeship with Dorothee VandeWalle in 2003. If you have ever worked with Dorothee you know, she is an artist… art in motion… in her presence and in her instruction. With an amazing foundation laid from my work with her, I understood grace and strength. Pilates would forever be an art I would cultivate in my personal practice, my teaching, and my training of teachers.
Choices Guided by the Principles
So years of Pilates instruction later, with a degree and license to practice Chinese Medicine, I opened Clasique with the vision of creating a space for whole health. Mind, body, and spirit. From the mission statement to the logo, website design, social media messaging, and community involvement, I built a brand that itself embodies the six principles of Pilates: centering, concentration, control, precision, flow, and breath. As well as many philosophies of Classical Chinese Medicine including Five Element Theory – the harmonious relationships of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood.
As the business evolved, I continued to make choices guided by the principles of these two modalities as they define the philosophy of Clasique on the whole. I kept my intentions clear.
- Create a space that is welcoming, warm and valuable to my local community.
- Create opportunities for clients to feel very supported, heard, and also challenged, and motivated.
- Hold space for people to make changes and do their transformative healing work.
- Create a working environment for my staff that allows them the opportunity to feel empowered, embraced, and engaged in meeting their professional goals and shining their unique light at Clasique, in Asheville, and beyond in their personal journeys.
I continue to instruct clients, treat patients, and lead with intention and presence. My vision is clear and also remains flexible. My passion is endless, and opportunities are wide open. And most importantly all the tools of self-cultivation are built-in by the very nature of what we offer. Continual self-care is a huge priority. I am devoted to my personal Pilates practice daily, and I receive the care of my fellow acupuncturists and the tools of Chinese Medicine to maintain wellness and work through imbalances and challenges that arise…because they will always emerge, and we can always meet them, learn, and continue moving.
What began as a one-woman show, with me personally offering care to my Pilates clients and my acupuncture patients in a 500 square foot studio has evolved… like, really evolved… in very beautiful, natural, graceful, and bold ways. Almost eight years later I am still deeply in love with what I do and who I am. I am devoted to our community and honored to say that I have a team of 12 talented service providers (acupuncturists, Pilates instructors, Pilates apprentices, and massage therapists) working with me in a 4,500 square foot beautiful new studio space. It is beautiful here. As I lead apprentices through a comprehensive Instructor Certification Program, I am honored to be passing on the Classical Pilates work. Our presence ripples out into our local community and beyond. And the natural dovetailing of acupuncture and Pilates is evident and everywhere. Together at Clasique, we radiate, we heal, we move, we smile while we sweat, we embrace, and we are powerhouses.
