How to Teach Pilates Part-Time and Maintain Your Sanity

Teaching Pilates part-time allows you to get paid for doing something you love and feel guilt-free at the same time

Side Hustle

Trying to build your business while working a “day job” doesn’t have to be as complicated and tricky as you think. This week I have ideas for you to rock your side hustle and either continue to teach as a side biz or grow it into your full-time teaching gig.

When I was going through my Pilates apprenticeship, I was managing a high-end women’s jewelry line. In my perfect world vision, I would be able to run my store five days a week and then teach Pilates part-time either before work or after work. Best of both worlds right?! Beautiful jewels, handbags, salary and vacation time, and then a few hours of teaching on the side to pay for my love of Pilates and let me write off some overpriced Pilates pants.

In less than 90 days of teaching, I realized that my perfect world scenario was not possible. Not possible if I wanted to teach all the clients I loved teaching. There just wasn’t enough time in my day. I would either have to turn clients away or quit my day job. I decided to quit my day job. But, that doesn’t mean you have to!

3 Tips for Teaching Part-time

  1. Get clear on when you teach and when you do not: If you missed my “Ideal teaching schedule” webinar, take my online course here. It’s imperative that you do not overwork yourself when you are building a side Pilates business and working another job while you build your Pilates business. YOU have to be #1 in your schedule.
  2. Know when to say YAAS and when to say NO!: This isn’t just saying yes to when you teach and no to hours you do not teach this is also suited for clients. Saying yes to the clients that are in line with the teaching career you want to have. Not only will having your ideal clients in your teaching hours inspire you they will also refer you to clients who are in line with the kinds of clients you are best suited to teach Pilates. When you only have a few hours a week to dedicate to teaching focus on the work you want to be doing in the future.
  3. Know your Why: Why are you teaching on the side? Is it to eventually teach Pilates full time? If so, then you need to know at what point you will ditch your “day job” and take the leap into teaching full-time. Check out our blog on maximizing your income as a Pilates instructor for help on knowing how many hours a week you need to teach to make your full-time teaching career a reality. Are you teaching part-time for extra income and because you are passionate about Pilates? Be clear on how many hours a week you can and want to teach. Then pat yourself on your back when you stick with that.

When you are teaching part-time and working or going to school during the rest of your time, it can be easy to feel like it’s all work and no play. Follow the tips above, and you’ll see that your side hustle can be more inspiring than draining and can be an excellent way to grow a future career. Hi Leslie. Just want to say I love your blog and have found it helpful. By the way I am wondering if you have known any university students who teach/taught Pilates on the side while studying, and how that work(ed) out for them. I am considering getting a second degree and to get certifications in Pilates so that I could support my studies from Pilates, but I need to know if anyone has made a similar arrangement work. I am also wondering about the possibilities of teaching Pilates online.

Hi Grace, I know plenty of teachers who had a full-time career or life outside of their training. It’s a lot of work of course but a good Pilates training takes about 9 month-12 months. If you’re organized with getting your observation and teaching hours in you can do it. As far as your question about online teaching its never been a better time to get started teaching no matter what platform you want to teach on (in real life or online). I’m actually writing a blog next on attracting your ideal client. And if you know who you are wanting to teach and how they like to consume the information you’ve got two keys to your success. Have you read my book? I go over picking the right program for you and even how to set up your life to get through your program. I also do coaching calls so if you need more specific support please reach out. xx
