The Most Supportive Community and How You Can Have It

When you decided to become a Pilates teacher you thought “I can’t wait to help people!” And, you knew that people were going to love how they felt after they took a session with you. You also worried about being new at something and if you’d pass your tests. But, it wasn’t until you got closer to the end of your hours that you probably thought “how do I get enough clients to pay my bills?” And, even, if you’d ever make enough to have your own studio, quit your 9-5 and take time off.

I hear ya! Seriously, I had no idea when I became a Pilates teacher that I could do it “for a living.” Honestly, I became a Pilates teacher so I could have a side hustle to pay for my Pilates obsession. I’ve shared in many interviews that I became a Pilates teacher during the last recession. And, I took the biggest leap of my life at the time to quit my salaried job and teach Pilates full time.

In studios I had heard from teachers with way more years of experience under their belt that it would take me a long time to build my clientele. That I should charge x because I was new. That I should work 6 days a week to get all the hours I could and that I should offer a discount for cash or for first-time sessions etc etc.

And, while it didn’t take me long to build my clientele up at all. In fact, within a few months, every single hour I had outside my retail job was booked and when I quit my job I had an even bigger problem on my hands…too many clients. I had believed some people on the other advice and it took me some time to rework all those mistakes.

Then, after a 6 months of being a Pilates teachers I started managing a studio and teachers. And that’s when I really realized that most instructors didn’t have the business knowledge that I had. And, because of this lack of information in trainings most people were struggling to make enough to pay back the investment in their training and more.

This realization made me sad and frustrated for every teacher. It drove me crazy to see some of the best instructors out there closing up shop or quitting teaching because “there was no money in Pilates.”

Luckily, being frustrated creates a drive in me. I hate complaints that occur more than once so I started on the path to create Profitable Pilates. I didn’t it know it at the time what it would become but I knew it needed to happen.

It started with my ebook. And then workshops in person and then online courses and webinars. But between the workshops and the webinars I had this vision for an online community that was not only a support group but a community where teachers and studio owners of all backgrounds could live and get advice, strategies, support, virtual high fives and inspire each other. Five years ago I created it. And, no one knew about it or bought it.

Yep, sometimes things fail in a big way.

But, I was still driven to make it work. So, I thought about other ways I could meet teachers and studio owners where they were and give them support. And that’s how webinars, online workshops and coaching calls started. And, then, 2 years ago (3 years after the original idea) I opened the doors to AGENCY my online coaching community.

Five brave souls started that day and today, 2 years later we still have 4 of the original members and 60 others.

Are You Doing This to Fill Your Classes?

Offering classes allows you to have an offering that more people can afford, to help more people at one time, create community and increase your hourly rate. But, filling those classes can feel like you’re throwing spaghetti at a wall and hoping it sticks. And, worse, when a class isn’t full it can not only hit your wallet but can feel deflating, personal and exhausting. So, how do you fill your classes? Especially today when it seems like everyone is giving classes away for free!

  1. Know who you want to come to class. Ok, so you might not know their real name but you need to have an idea of who they are. What they do and what they are searching for. Then you need to reach out to the them where they are already hanging out.
  2. Know the communities your future attendee is hanging out. Yep, where do they work, grab coffee, shop, workout? Who is their best friend? How can you collaborate, partner up or get their bestie to invite them to your class?
  3. Get creative! You do not need to post about your class times on your social as much as you think. Instead, post about what people are saying, what they are experiencing, and what they will get by coming to your class. Let them look up what your schedule is. You’ve got .5 seconds to get them to stop scrolling IF they are even already following you. So, use that real estate to show off why you rock and who are for.
  4. Go where they are.  This doesn’t have to be in person although that is faster. You can use the beauty of social media geotagging, forums, and groups to find your people and then get to know them. Yep, notice how I didn’t say invite them to your class just yet. Instead, introduce yourself, ask them about themselves. What do they like to do? Think of it like dating!
  5. Be consistent! You’re gonna want to give up the first few times your classes are lackluster in attendance. But, it now takes 7-17 touchpoints for people to make that decision. Yep, FB says average is 12 ads of the same offering before people click. And the other research out there is 7-17…that means you can talk about it once and then be disappointed that people didn’t flock in droves. Get in front of your ideal client as much as you can and be consistent in sharing why you rock and what they get by taking your classes.

For more strategy on getting the word out there let’s do a coaching call. Depending on if you’re a studio owner trying to fill everyone’s classes or an instructor trying to fill your own there are some tactical strategies that will be unique to your goals.

Until then, know who you are talking to, get in front of them often, and then remind them a few more times.

And, do yourself a favor and don’t race to the bottom on the discounts to get people into class. People are not googling “cheapest Pilates class near me.” Own your worth and people will value your classes even more!

How to Prepare for a New Client

First impressions are important. And, when it comes to a new client engaging with you or your studio it’s even more integral. When someone comes in for their first class or session 60% of the decision to start a new fitness regimen is made. All you have to do is help them decide that it is you. Here are my tips for scheduling and teaching a new client.

  1. Make it easy for them: Is it clear on your site what to do next? How to schedule? What you offer?
  2. Tell them what to do: Don’t offer them all the times in the world you have or ask them when they want to get started. Train them from the beginning to schedule their life around Pilates with you.
  3. Have a “what to expect” email: Whether they sign up over the phone, email or via text be sure to send them an email that tells them your policies, what to expect, wear, park etc..
  4. Know their why.
  5. Forget about selling Pilates. They just need to trust that you’re the person who can help them.
  6. Follow up even if they said they don’t want to do Pilates. Send them a thank you note.
  7. Remember that their first package is still the courting process. Hold them accountable to their sessions, consistency and goals.
  8. Train them how to treat you and the studio. If your policies are broken you have to uphold them. It’s not a fun convo but it’s most important in the beginning.
  9. Don’t take things personally. Whether a client loves Pilates, doesn’t, late cancels or quits it’s not personal. Read the 4 agreements. You’re not for everyone and that is ok.
  10. Know when you want to teach, where and whom. It’s your business and you’ll get more clients that inspire you when you’re clear on these things. Not everyone is for you and that’s ok.

It’s easy to get caught up on selling Pilates or the training  to the new client. But, the truth is you are the guide. Your studio is the community. If you are clear on who you are for, what you offer it makes it easier for your future clients to decide on you too. And, then help them out by making sure your site, how you schedule them and prep them makes it easy for them to know you are the expert at what you do.

What Are You Complaints Teaching You

My first date with my husband was because a friend of mine complained one too many times about a lost scarf. It drove me nuts to hear a repeated complaint. So, I offered her my scarf in exchange for a date with my now husband.

Complaints are not a bad thing. But, if you keep them around then they are. Because the time you spend complaining about the problem is actually procrastination. This week, notice when you make the same sort of complaint. What can you do to solve that problem and remove that complaint? What would getting rid of that complaint allow you to do more of?

Do You Need to do Videos to Grow Your Business?

It seems like everyone and everything is going digital these days doesn’t it? Well, it’s true! Facebook and Instagram are pushing content that includes organic videos more than ever these days. And, with the recent changes at IG where they allow the first minute of your IGTV to go in your feed to get more views it certainly makes you wonder, should you be doing videos?

Now, I know some of you are hating on social and wishing it could go back to being for connecting with friends. But, before you roll your eyes and stop reading let me just tell you a little goes a long way. Don’t forget that I know and believe its not about followers and likes. It’s the quality content that shares who you are, what you do and whom you’re for that gets you doing more of what you love-teaching Pilates. However, just like there are different learning styles you have to know how to teach to.  There are different ways people connect to our message. Some love a good read so blogs and great copy on your site will be perfect. Others need a picture, they need to see themselves in your photos. People who look like them. And, there are some that need audio. They need to hear your voice, and the visual of video will hit two types of learners. So, having some video content of you rocking what you do with your ideal client is quite compelling.

Now, that I’ve perked your ears a little bit please note that I am not going to say you have to start posting as many videos as you can. Not at all. If you want to do that than let’s talk because there are some def do’s and don’ts for Youtube and IGTV. But, for many of you I am talking a video or few on your site and every once in a while on social so that people can see you in your element. Can get to know you. See you as the expert at what you do.

Facebook (who owns IG) has a goal to beat out YouTube. So, if you’re like me and you post videos to YT than do not post those video links on FB. They will bury those posts. You’ll have to do an organic video for them. This is something that might seem annoying for you. But, if you’re not trying to become a YouTuber than it’s really simple, take the video. Cutoff the beginning and ends where you press start and stop and post it to your studio/business FB page or group. If you filmed it in vertical video it’s great for IGTV if in horizontal it’s awesome for FB and you can still upload it to YT just don’t share that link on FB to promote it.

Create videos as part of a giveaway in exchange for email addresses for your newsletters.

Post videos of you and a client accomplishing an exercise.

Share tips on exercises your ideal client can do at home.

Vlog! Allow your clients and future clients to hear what is on your mind.

These are just a few things you can do with video to attract your ideal client to your schedule.

I’ll get honest with you, when I first started posting on YT I thought “Why me?!” I mean, who was I to create these videos. But, now a few years later I have met more people around the world because of my videos. And, my goal was to travel the world to teach. I have a teacher I coach who creates videos of modifications. Her ideal client is someone who is just like her. Wants to get her move on but due to injuries can’t do it like everyone else. I have another friend who does lots of mini classes.

Who do you wish was your client?

What do they need?

Film the answer to their questions. Post it on your websites and share it on social media to drive traffic back to your website where they will then be prompted to schedule a session or class with you!

So, should you be doing some video? I think so. But, you don’t have to. It first depends on the goals for your business and what you feel comfortable doing. However, as I mentioned I was not keen on the idea. And now, I am sooo grateful I was pushed to start. And geez, those first videos sucked but the more I did the more comfortable I got.

What is the Difference Between a Blog and a Newsletter?

Blogging vs Newsletter? This is a question I get often from fitness professionals, Pilates teachers, and Studio owners all the time! The follow up to this question is “which one do I need to do?” Or, “do I need to blog and write newsletters?” So, today I am going to explain the differences between a blog and a newsletter and answer if you need one, the other or both!

What is a Blog? Let’s get real for a moment when I started blogging about four years ago (wow 4 years of biz blogs for ya) I fought my biz coach and SEO pro’s on the need to blog. I thought blogging was dead, everyone wanted to find things on Social Media and that no one would read it. But, I was so so wrong! While I may not make a living as a blogger (although some people still do) blogging is still hands down the biggest help in people like you finding me. The search engines love blogs because they read words on the internet to help find articles (pages on websites) that answer peoples questions. They want your site to be the answer to peoples searches. If they provide the best answers to what people are searching for then those people will use their search engine all the time (aka they can hit them with ads). So, your blogs are free advertising for your biz because if your blog answers peoples questions Google and other engines will promote your site! How freaking cool is that?

Blogging also allows you to attract your ideal client. Instead of blogging about a basic answer to what Pilates is you can blog about how Pilates helps a particular ache, sport, hobby, demographics etc. Blogging allows you to show how you’re the expert in your area. And, allows future clients who land on your site to see how awesome you are!

Blogging also updates your website. Yes, you want this! It tells the internet that your site is fresh and being taken care of. If you thought you could make your site once and leave it alone until you raised your rates or updated your bio I hate to break it to you but your website might be a bit “dusty.” I write a blog every week on all my sites. This keeps my websites at the top of the searches! And, I didn’t pay for that.

What is a Newsletter? A newsletter is a direct communication between you and your peeps. Anyone who opts into your list can receive this newsletter. Yes, they should opt-in vs you adding them in especially if you do business with the EU. Newsletters should add value to your clients and are great ways to create communication with your past clients, current clients and future clients. Newsletters allow you to remind people about classes, holiday schedules, events, etc. Some businesses send daily newsletters. I enjoy sending weekly newsletters. And, while a monthly newsletter is also fine it may not have the same effect as something a little more frequent and consistent.

What you put in a newsletter is more current event like. It has CTA’s (call to action) and those who are on your list want to be on your list. They put their info in and said: “Yass, please talk to me.” And, like blogs, people do think emails are dead they are still wrong. Here’s why do you remember when FB and IG went down? Almost a whole day was lost and millions of dollars were lost in ad spend. If you rely simply on social media to share updates, events, etc not only are you betting your business on the whim of other businesses but what happens if any of these platforms decide to change the rules? What happens if they get shut down? As it is if you’re lucky only 6% of your followers see your stuff. Read that again, 6% of your followers might see your stuff. But, a newsletter goes directly into your client’s inbox and if you’re good with the subject lines they get opened, read and more!

Like a blog, newsletters must add value. If you are just telling me what workshop you’re selling this month I’m unlikely to get to the end and hit “sign me up.” But, if you share info (which can feel like a blog but it’s not because a blog is on your website) then tell me how the workshop or class you’re offering goes along with that added value I’m more likely to say “take my money.” Does that make sense?

What you put in your newsletters really depends on you and your business. If you want my newsletter 101 course contact me here. What would you say to a friend you haven’t seen in a week, month or year? Why do they need to hear this? How can they hear more?

Do you need a blog, a newsletter or both? Great questions! I am so glad you asked. I am going to say you need both. They serve two massively different purposes. Blogging attracts people to your site but once they are there the likelihood of them coming back is slim. Unless they become a client and have to come back to sign up for sessions or classes then any updates you make to your site, your schedule, your offerings may not be seen. So, having a newsletter that shares these updates is key to getting eyes on all your good stuff! If you just do a newsletter then your website won’t be able to be the best assistant you ever had. It can’t be the answer to peoples burning internet questions if you don’t have answers. How often you blog and send newsletters is up to you. I share a TON about these things in my online coaching group. And we can dive deeper into what’s the perfect combo for your business in there.

I know you are thinking how on earth will I have the time and also what the heck am I supposed to write about? Make sure you read my blog about “not working all the time” and take my blogging and newsletter courses. The answers to all this and more are definitely in there. But, if you want to do more of what you love and make a living doing it then I would find the time to make both happen consistently.

How to Not Work ALL The Time

Everyone wants to work for themselves. The idea of being your own boss has a lot of unicorns, rainbows, and freedom around it. But, if you’re not careful, when you work for yourself it’s easy to make your own business, your dream business, be just as much a slog as working for someone else. So, my Studio Owners, Independent Contractors, Home studio owners here are my best tips to not make your dream job just like every other job.

  1. Create your ideal schedule: Grab a blank calendar and put your personal life in it first. Then your personal practice and anything else that you want to make time for before you put work in. Then your teaching hours go in. This part of the calendar is key, the tasks that propel your business forward AKA marketing, networking goes in next. Last is the admin, the daily tasks that have to be done every day but don’t bring in the money. For more help on this catch my course on it or contact me for a one-on-one call.
  2. Set a timer: I use the cube timer but you can use your phone. Set a time for how long you’ll be in your inbox, on Instagram or work on any project. When the timer goes off move on to the next task. I know that means sometimes I didn’t finish a project but it does mean I can move on to the next and keep all the plates spinning. If you work on your email until the emails are all read you will never get to your blogs, contacting businesses to collaborate etc.
  3. Say no: to anything that isn’t an F yass! Seriously, say no to more things than you think. If “no” is too much for you then say “let me get back to you later.” Take some time to filter the opportunity through your goals. It’s easy to say “yes” to clients who want extra times. But, that could mean working at times you don’t enjoy and then you will feel like you’re working all the time.
  4. Have an accountability partner: I have 2 and I love them! We have weekly check in’s and set a timer for each person to share what they are working on, what went well, what didn’t go well and what we need support on. You never want to be the person who didn’t get their sh*t done. I recommend people who have businesses that are different than your own. And, try to keep it less 2-4 people but people who will not cancel on you last minute. So, maybe not your close friends. Those who are in my coaching group get me checking on them and their goals each week!
  5. Have your own goals: Be super clear on your own goals, share them with your accountability partners, me, and anyone else who you feel will help you get your goals accomplished. If you don’t have your own goals it’ll be super easy for someone else’s goals to become yours.
  6. Make dates: seriously, make a date with your person, make it a standing date if you can. Dates with friends, put vacations in the books even if you do a staycation. If you don’t then work will just take over and a year will go by and you’ll feel bummed that you “work too much” or that “time flies” but it’s because you didn’t put breaks in your calendar.
  7. Routines: I have a morning routine and a sleep routine. These are not only vital to me sandwiching life between moments of self-care it also helps me feel grounded and in control of my day and how I feel no matter what timezone I find myself in or what is happening. Everyone has to start their day in their own way but find a routine that works for you. I prefer to create before I consume so I try not to read emails or read notifications until I have written down what my goals are for the day. I also get my workout in before I teach others. You might prefer the reverse of all of this. Especially if you are not a morning person.

I could go on and on with more tips on how to not work all the time so if you need more ask in the comments below or set up a call with me. But, please don’t work all the time. I know that there are times in your business that require more of your hours but set a date for how long that excessive work time will last.

Working for yourself is pretty freaking cool but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In fact, I find it’s harder. I have to hold myself accountable to arbitrary deadlines and since I won’t fire myself if I miss a deadline then what’s the problem right? Well, the problem is our businesses get more stressful when we are not achieving the goals we have when we want/need them. And then we think we have to say “yes” all the time, work more, do less Pilates, fewer trips, fewer days off. And then all of a sudden you’re working ALL the time!

My weeks look different every month so I have to be really clear about my time off and then I have to put more goals/deadlines in my calendar before my clients get options. That means I have to have clarity around my schedule at least a month in advance. If I don’t I’m racing to get work done, working on my days off, skipping yoga and my own Pilates practice.

You are too good at what you do. You are the only person who can do what you do and your clients and future clients need you to be clear on your goals, firm about your schedule and taking care of you so that you can teach them.

3 Reasons Your Newsletters Are Not Effective

Writing Newsletters takes time, and it is one of those things that most teachers and studio owners would prefer to not do. Convince themselves that email is dead. It’s not. And, while email marketers are seeing that its harder to get the ROI they used to get you are not an email marketer. You’re using your newsletters to engage with your clients, past clients and future clients (because people forward emails that are worthy).  Your newsletters remind clients of why you’re amazing. They offer a way for clients to email you back, create a conversation. But, you feel they are not worth it. And, it’s because you’re not writing effective newsletters. People get an average of 142 emails a day. So, why are yours being trashed with the others?

  1. You are only “selling.” Yes, we want clients to sign up online, to create standing appointments. To get get info about new classes or the schedule changes. But, if all you do is sell to them in newsletters you’re going to totally be flagged by their emails as “promotions” and you won’t even make it in their real inbox. And, your clients don’t open emails to be sold at (unless it’s cyber Monday) they open because they are want to hear more about what they care about. They want valuable information that will make them better.
  2. You are not consistent. You send a newsletter once a month then you miss a month and then you do two in a month. It’s erratic. Humans like predictable. Be consistent. Try to get send a weekly newsletter if possible but if you’re only going to do monthly ADD LOTS OF VALUE and never miss.
  3. Your subject lines are boring. Yep, it’s really all about the subject line. “Monthly Newsletter” is not sexy. Not exciting. It doesn’t make me want to open it. I still might but it’ll be the rare bird. Have fun with your subject lines, grab their attention. You want to stand out amongst the email crowd. One of my best open rates came from my newsletters “the biggest mistake I ever made.”

I know you know you need this newsletter. I know you know you need to stay top of mind with your clients. I know you want to have a way to reach out to old clients and inconsistent clients. Newsletters do that!

Take the time to write a consistent newsletter, that gives away information they can share with their friends. Add value to their life. Have a call to action. Maybe it’s a question they should answer, maybe they should share the newsletter with a friend? Ask them to do something. People don’t do things without a call to action. Have fun with your subject lines.

What is a Pilates Teachers Schedule?

When I first became a Pilates instructor I was teaching clients and classes every weekday morning from 6 am to 9 am then racing to my other job across town to manage a jewelry store. And then on most weeknights, I would race back across town and teach one or two more clients. And then I also taught clients on my day off from my store gig. I thought it would take forever to build my business up but it didn’t and so within a few months I was quickly burning the candle at both ends. But, I had no idea at the time that what I was doing wasn’t the best idea. I mean, every other teacher I knew who was building their business and even some who had grown their businesses were working the weirdest schedules. One day after working an almost 70 hr week I wondered what is a Pilates teachers schedule?

Should I be teaching mornings and evenings? Did I need to teach six days a week? And, even though people said I should teach when clients wanted it was that really the best answer?

Over the last 10+ years of teaching, I have changed my schedule almost as often as the wind changes. And, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. What it has allowed me to do is see that there is almost no hour where a client doesn’t want a session! Before you think I am wrong I have taught people at their 3:30 am, I have taught people as early as 5 am in person, and then there are the clients who have requested 8:30 pm or even 8 am on a Sunday! I love changing my schedule because every time I do it I dial it in even more to fit the nature of the life I enjoy living.

If you have ever taken a workshop with me you know that I believe your goals and life go in the schedule first. But, this is not how most people set up their teaching schedule. Instead, they put their clients in first. Admit it, how many times have you not said yes to having lunch with a good friend, going out of town for the day or not scheduling a personal session with another teacher because you had to teach?

I’m not saying just move people around willy nilly. But, I do believe that you should be super clear on your goals and what you want out of life and then create your teaching schedule.

After working with a lot of teachers I have found the ones that are super firm and clear on when they are available to teach no only are booked they also know exactly how much money they will make each week, month because it’s clear when they look at their schedule what slots are empty. And, their clients are also better trained to keep a standing appointment or cancel in the appropriate time. The teachers who let clients tell them when they want to come in typically have clients who are inconsistent. This means they are not truly getting all the benefits of Pilates and will probably disappear for portions of time if not longer. These teachers also will feel like they don’t have control over their schedule and will see a “swiss cheese” schedule. Sessions all over the place, empty slots all over but not big enough to do anything on so they are working for their business instead of the other way around.

I know, that sounds a bit harsh but teachers I love you! I am you. I have done all the mistakes of letting clients tell me when they want to take. And, that quickly lead to me not wanting to be a teacher. The moment I learned the phrase “I have this time or I have this time.” And, “I’m not available then but I do have ___.” My life-work balance became mine! It was under my control.

I was recently asked what a day or a week in my life looked like? How do I structure my days?

To be honest, since I travel I make some changes to the schedule often but the basic structure is there.

5-6 days a week I workout first thing in the morning. That is the time when no one is awake. I can run with my dog and listen to a podcast. I then often go to a fitness class around 6 am and workout with my friends. Afterward, I’ll begin my teaching day. I teach 5 mornings a week for 3-4 hours. Then I use the middle of the day for whatever I want. Sometimes I do Pilates classes other times I catch up on emails or spend a little time on social media. I take calls or watch webinars, read a book, get a facial etc. The middle of the day is mine for whatever I want it to be. Then, on Mondays, I’ll allow 2 more clients in the late afternoon. Tues-Thur I teach a couple of evening clients whom I adore and have been with me for years! The other days of the week I am either off or have called it a day before the afternoon.

As far as how much I teach I follow what I share with many other teachers. I have a goal dollar amount (gross) in mind for the whole year. I divide that number by my average hourly session rate and then by the number of weeks of the year I will teach. I will only teach that amount of clients in a week. If people ask for a session and I have hit that number they go on a waitlist for any cancellation. I promise you unless I had a couple of weeks where I didn’t teach the average amount I do not add additional hours on. It’s important you don’t do this either. Waitlists are great things to have. And, you train your clients to schedule early!

My schedule works for me, I never force how I like to work on anyone and that means you too. I would love for you to watch my course on goal setting if you haven’t yet. And also my course on client scheduling. Then get super clear on the times of days that light your fire. If you’re not a morning person don’t teach in the morning. I promise you there are enough clients to go around! We can find your clients for the afternoon or evening.

How to Be Referable

Social Media, Funnels and Online Ads may be all the rage. You may even be considering things like Classpass, groupon and online marketing. But, before you do let me remind you that referrals are still the number 1 way Pilates teachers and Pilates studios are getting new business. And, not just drop-in’s but legit clients who come again and again! So, how do you get more referrals? Do you just hope that your clients tell all their friends about you? Are there ways to get other businesses to rave about your Pilates business? And, what about those doctors, PT’s and Chiropractors? How do we get them to tell their clients about you?

  1. Be Referable: I know that seems obvious but what does that even mean? It means you have to prove you can deliver what you promise. So, that first or only client you have to make them your priority. Get testimonials and put them on your site. If they can attest to your awesomeness then others will feel good about referring your their peeps.
  2. Be clear on who you want to be referred to you. I know, you may be thinking “but LL I want anyone right now!” The truth is you don’t want just anyone. So, who do you want to teach? Get clear on this so that when people talk about you they know what to say and to whom.
  3. Always be open to Referrals. I know, you’re thinking, duh, but the truth is sometimes we don’t realize that we are closing the door on referrals because we are not actively talking to people about who we are what we do. Recently I blogged about things you can do today to improve your Pilates business. One of the tips was to tell 5 people who you are, what you do and whom you are for. Do you know how many people told me they would try that? TOO MANY! Even if you are booked and have a waitlist make sure you are telling people what you rock at. If you get peeps that are not for you-you’ll just refer them to the right teacher. Which people will LOVE!
  4. Make sure your clients know your offerings! This may sound obvious too. But, if you’re not consistently sending out newsletters it’s probably not obvious to your clients what else you do or offer. I write weekly newsletters and even still one of my clients just found out I have online mat classes (his wife reads the newsletters and clearly he doesn’t). I know you feel like a broken record but trust…they don’t know as much as you think they do.
  5. Be Remarkable! Meaning, share and do things that make your clients talk nonstop about you.
  6. Refer to others. Yes, give business away to competitors. You are not able to teach everyone. If people are looking for class-based pricing tell them who the best in town is. If they need to be in privates and you offer classes know the teachers in your area who excel at teaching privates. Trust me referring begets referrals.

Got these down? Ok, now you have to make a list of the businesses you love in your community. Find out how you can support them. Wait what?! Yep, find out what they need help in. Maybe they need a referral of someone you know? And, do you know what happens when you’re generous and you simply take the time to find out how you can support another business? They, in turn, want, desire to support you!
